For Democrats to Flip Texas, they need to do better in blue counties

Texas is one of the fastest growing states in the nation, and some of the fastest growing places in Texas are the blue counties. The 2018 election was decided by a razor-thin margin and it's because Democrats in blue counties stayed home. The reason? Because they didn't think Texas was a competitive state. In the end, Democrats won blue counties with 58% of the vote while Republicans won red counties with 65% of the vote. Those are big differences in a race that came down to a 2% point margin.

Every vote counts everywhere.

The chart above shows that Democrats have been increasing our vote haul in every presidential election since 2004. When we add the extremely high turnout 2018 midterm election, you see a favorable trend for Democrats in 2020 - if we keep pushing our turnout numbers up in blue counties.

Mobilization and
Vote-by-Mail

The world is a different place due to COVID-19, and that includes elections. In addition to traditional means of campaigning, we also need to place a heavy emphasis on vote-by-mail applications and turnout. This is a critical tool for a critical election, and while recent court rulings have expanded vote-by-mail access for some voters we need to keep up the fight for all voters.

We also need to mobilize people of color and young voters, particularly those 18-34, who share our progressive values and want to see change at the state and federal level.

The 2021 Texas Legislature

Democracy is like a muscle - you have to exercise it to keep it healthy. Elections are the priority now, but they are also a part of a process that includes legislative advocacy, activism, and more.

If you believe in things like access to affordable care, public education, reforming student loan debt, criminal justice reform, ending qualified immunity, abortion rights, voting rights, and so much more - then to build a stronger and more inclusive Texas our work must continue.
